Why TikTok has been removed in India
The Indian government has said that these apps violated the privacy of users and stored their data outside the country. Following this, the government issued a notice to Apple and Google to remove all 59 Chinese apps. This means these apps will no longer be available on the Indian version of the Google Play Store and the App Store.
Not only that, but the users will also not be able to use them. Even if they have the app already installed as the government has also asked ISPs and telecom companies to help enforce the ban.
India and China
Although the official statement focuses on security and defense, it’s clear that the selection of these 59 apps has to do with the tensions between India and China. Although TikTok has been banned a couple of times in the recent past, it has quickly come back. In this case, however, it might take longer for the banned apps to return, if at all.
TikTok in India
TikTok had nearly 119 million active users in India and was among the top 10 apps on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Users who still have the TikTok app on their mobile phone can still be able to use it, however, the app can’t be downloaded anymore. Most other Chinese apps banned in India are still available for download.
